Freshman football continues undefeated, beats BK

The Mountain Home High School freshmen football team kept its undefeated season alive last Thursday night, beating Bishop Kelly 34-16.

That game improved the team's record to 6-0 in the season. So far the team has played Jerome, Emmett, Middleton, Kuna, Columbia, and the Bishop Kelly Knights.

"BK is kind of a benchmark game. They are always a well-coached football team and it tells you where you're at," said the team's head coach, Andrew Bailey.

Bailey has been coaching football for 11 years and has only lost to Bishop Kelly once. "I think we overcome adversity very well, and we play well as a team; we're constantly improving,"he said.

Against Bishop Kelly, the MHHS freshman team's quarterback, Steven Straley, passed for 83 yards, rushed for 39 yards, and had two touchdowns. Anthony Costello had 43 rushing yards and 70 receiving yards. And Xavier Wright had 10 carries for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The team's defensive leaders against Bishop Kelly included Colton Zamora, with 16 tackles and one sack, and Adam Miller, with 12 tackles and two sacks. "I think Coach Suber does a great job with the defense and he is one of the best defensive coaches I've ever seen," said Coach Bailey.

"My favorite part of coaching the team is seeing the players develop and watching them develop as excellent young men on and off the field, and I hope they can learn what it takes to be a champion in all aspects of life,"said Bailey.

The team's next game is Oct. 3 at Nampa at 4 p.m. Coach Bailey and the freshmen football team hope to finish the season with no losses. The team faces a tough Skyview team next Thursday, Oct. 11, at home.

"I would like to tell the fans I appreciate their support, and I have one of the best coaching staffs I have ever had, so a lot of the credit should go to them," said Coach Bailey.
