Get ready for school

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

The first day of school is next Monday and parents should start getting their kids ready for another "adventure in education."

It's important that parents stress the value of school to their kids. They don't "have to go to school," they "get to go to school." Every day is designed to march them toward adulthood, learning the skills they'll need to succeed in life.

Parents need to make sure their kids get enough sleep, so start moving their "vacation" schedules slowly back to "school" bed times this week.

Make sure they have the supplies they need.

And throughout the year, give them all the support they need.

Stay in touch with their teachers. Know how well they're doing, and if they're having problems, work with the teachers. The district encourages parental involvement.

And make sure they have all the safety skills they need going to and from school. Remind them that drivers may not always pay attention, so the kids need to watch out for cars and cross intersections carefully. Remind them not to accept rides from strangers.

Each year is a learning experience. Help your kids succeed.
