Utah teen dies in shooting incident

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

The Owyhee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Utah boy on Aug. 2 in Bruneau.

Henry Smith died at the scene of a relatives' home after being shot, apparently accidentally, by a 17-year-old juvenile, who is related to the victim.

Very little information is being released at this time, said Sgt. Jim Bish of the Owhyee County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting took place at about 10:10 p.m. Bruneau Quick Response EMTs and sheriff deputies were dispatched to the residence.

Smith had been shot with a .40-caliber handgun, allegedly belonging to the 17-year-old. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 17-year-old's parents were home at the time of the shooting. The victim's parents were in Utah.

"We're still trying to piece this thing together," Bish said, noting that the tragedy has been emotional for those living in the close-knit community.

No charges have been filed.
