Native Americans help "pioneers" cross the river, as they did 150 years ago

The 22nd Annual Three Island Crossing in Glenns Ferry will take place this weekend, Aug. 10-12,

The main crossing event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and recreates the dangerous crossing of the Snake River by pioneers using the Oregon Trail. The event remains dangerous for the wagons, outriders and horses and oxen that take part.

Saturday is the main celebration, with displays set up by Mountain Men and area Native Americans from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation taking part. It is a colorful event that provides a true feel for the pioneer days.

Line up for Friday's parade begins at 6 p.m., with the parade beginning at 7 p.m. The parade will follow its usual route from the Elmore County Fairgrounds to Three Island State Park.

Coinciding with the Three Island Crossing is a Fine Art and Folk Art Show at Carmela Vineyards. The show runs from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

Food and craft booths will be open Friday evening where most of the events take place, at Three Island Crossing State Park, from 6-9:30 p.m. and all day Saturday.

Saturday morning, from 7-10 a.m. is a Pioneer Breakfast, sponsored by the local Moose Lodge.

A Mountain Man Village will be open Friday evening and all day Saturday.

The reenactment of the river crossing will begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m., followed by live entertainment near the pavilion from noon to 4 p.m.

A community worship service will be held Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Admission to this year's Crossing is $5. Children 12-years and under will be admitted free. Admission includes the park entry fee (for Saturday only) and all crossing entertainment. Presale buttons are available now at Heart of Idaho Fudge Factory, the Glenns Ferry Chamber Office, or from any Three Island Crossing Committee member.

There is no charge for Friday evening's performance and the park entry fee will be waived for that evening. However, the park entry fee will be collected on Sunday morning.
