Fireworks cause of grass fire on Hwy. 30

Thursday, June 28, 2007

An illegal ground balloon firework caused a small brush fire that closed down Highway 30 in both directions for about 15 minutes around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was located in the grassy area between the railroad tracks and the highway across from Super Storage.

Lt. Steve Shockey said someone probably threw it out of their car window. Firefighters said that this fire is the first of what is to come(during the fireworks season).

Approximately one third of an acre was burned by the fire.
