Wednesday, June 27, 2007
The fireworks display will start at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4.

Mountain Home's Fourth of July activities get underway next Wednesday with events in Carl Miller Park during the day and the annual fireworks display put on by the volunteer fireman at the golf course.

The El-Wyhee Business Association will open next Wednesday's activities with its Festival in the Park, beginning with an 8 a.m. breakfast featuring eggs, pancakes, ham and coffee.

There will be free entertainment all day long for children and adults and the day's activities will include the Little Miss El-Wyhee Pageant for girls ages 4 to 8.

Most events begin at noon but specific times for the activities scheduled to take place in the park had not been announced by press time.

The ECHO Dancers will perform during the day, along with the The Mountain Home High School Cheerleaders, and music will be provided by Curley Surles, back from Nashville with footage from his recorded CD.

Demonstrations will be performed during the day by The National Horseshoe Pitching Association, The Four Wheel Drive Club, The Tin Lizzies, and The National Guard. A Burnout Demonstration for anyone that wants to enter their vehicle also will be included in the days events.

A number of vendor booths also will be set up in the park.

Anyone who would like to participate in the activities should call 587-5372.

Throughout the day there will be raffles for door prizes, including a Citizen Watch, a Seiko clock, Idaho opal and Idaho garnet pendants set in sterling silver, a basket of goodies, a tapestry from the Western Elmore County Recreation District, and other items. Winners need not be present.

There also will be local artists showing their arts, crafts and quilts. Anyone who would like to display their art should call Patti at 587-2777.

The Wash and Shine Car Show also will be held, with classic cars, street rods, muscle cars, 4x4s, motorcycles, low riders, imports, and other vehicles on display. New or old vehicles are welcome. Call Bill at 599-0008 to register for that event.

A large free kids area with inflatable toys including a giant slide, bounce house, bungee run, and a tot area will be provided. Volunteers are needed to help supervise those activities. Call Teri at 599-0906 to volunteer.

Free hot dogs will be available with a donation to the Ronald McDonald House. Other food items will be sold during the day, including homemade pies. The association is asking people to donate pies for the event. Call Sue at 599-2686 for more information.

The Mountain Home Fire Department will suspend its large "Silver Wings" American flag over American Legion Boulevard.

Most activities in Carl Miller Park will conclude around 5 p.m.

In addition to the events in Carl Miller Park, American Legion Post No. 26 will host its annual Fourth of July picnic at the Legion Hall beginning at noon. Hamburgers, hot dogs and beans will be furnished by the post. Those attending are asked to bring a side dish. All veterans and their families are invited to attend.

As the day moves toward dusk, activities shift to the Desert Canyon Golf Course for what is generally considered to be one of the best fireworks displays in the region, put on by the volunteer firemen.

The fireworks display is expected to start at about 10:15 p.m.

The grand finale will honor Barb Cristobal, who for many years helped raise funds for the fireworks show as part of the Streetwalkers group.

North 8th East Street will be closed to traffic prior to and during the event. People with handicapped stickers will be allowed to park in the golf course parking lot. Viewing will be allowed from the first hole fairway on the golf course only. No private fireworks are allowed.

The old Kmart parking lot will be closed to parking.

Areas north of the overpass near the businesses and Industrial Park are good alternative sites for people to park and watch the show.
