On June 15, the MHHS tennis coaches and team members awarded certificates and medals to 26 students who completed the 2-week Tiger Tennis Summer Camp.

Two sessions were held each weekday to accommodate different age brackets (8-12 years and 13 years old and up).

"The camp was a great success," said Coach Tamzy House. "All the kids worked hard -- they learned the basics of playing tennis, and just had a great time."

Each day the players did conditioning and court movement drills and learned/practiced tennis stroke fundamentals. The youths learned the various formats of match play, tennis rules and etiquette, and how to put different strokes together to play a point.

The camp ended with the completion of a Mini-Camp Classic tournament for each session.

Brad Foreman won the championship in the 8-12 year group with Caleb Sewell taking second.

In the 13 and up group, Jared Mott beat Jessica Shrecker for the championship.

"I was very excited to see the progress the kids made in 2 weeks -- there was natural talent on the courts -- I look forward to eventually having all the kids play on the Tiger Tennis Team," said Coach House.

"The camp was made extra special for the kids by the generous sponsorship of Alvin Powers of KMHI radio and the Elmore County Eyecare Center," said Coach House.

"With their generous donation we were able to provide T-shirts, completion medals and certificates and tournaments awards."

Proceeds from the camp will go towards supplies and court equipment next year plus a new uniform purchase for 2009, said Coach House.
