MHHS graduation this Friday

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Two hundred and twelve seniors are projected to graduate at the Mountain Home High School Commencement that will take place Friday, May 25, at the Tiger Field, beginning at 7 p.m.

"In a sense it is bittersweet. Last time I taught I was a PE teacher at Hacker (Middle School)," said Principal Jeff Johnson, who took over the reins of MHHS this year, replacing Barry Cahill who retired at the end of last year.

"The group graduating is the last group I ever taught," Johnson said. The students were in fifth grade then. "To see them grow up into young men and women and to get to know them has been great," he said. "This has been a great class, and I'm excited for them. They have been awesome and have set the tone for years to come."

The class colors are blue and white. The class song is "Forever Young."

Students are asked to arrive at Tiger Field for graduation line-up at 6 p.m. "Pray for good weather," said Johnson. "If it (graduation) happens to go inside, students will receive six tickets for graduation," due to the limited seating.

To encourage a safe and fatality free graduation, parents have held a Senior Celebration after graduation since 1986. It is an alcohol- and drug-free environment and this year it will take place at Hacker Middle School from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. following graduation. Students can play cards and win chips, and at the end of the night there will be an auction for gifts, said Johnson. There will be other games too, not just cards. (It is) Great for the kids," said Johnson.

Each senior can bring one guest. In the past there have been 500 to 600 people in attendance. Senior Celebration costs $25 per senior and $25 per guest. A $50 donation was requested from parents as well.
