Tigers score shutout at Emmett

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

The Mountain Home Tigers defense continued to show promise, shutting down the Emmett defense all night long, and the Tigers came out in the second half to score three times on their way to an 18-0 conference football win over the Emmett Huskies Friday night at Emmett, spoiling the Huskies' Homecoming.

The Tigers received the ball to start the first quarter, and moved the ball from their own 24 down to the Emmett 18 before the drive stalled. Kyle Clark's 35-yard field goal attempt was no good.

Neither team was able to move the ball that well offensively in the first half. The Huskies tried two field goals, but neither were good, and the first half ended scoreless.

Mountain Home came out fired up in the second half, and moved the ball 61 yards in four plays on their first drive, Zacq Hale taking it 36 yards for a score. The PAT kick was no good, but the Tigers led, 6-0, just 63 seconds into the second half.

The Huskies had a chance to score late in the third quarter, when the snap from center sailed way over Kyle Clark's head and he had to pounce on the ball at the 19, Emmett taking over there.

The Huskies managed to get to the Tiger 16, but were stopped and tried a 33-yard field goal that was no good.

Mountain Home got on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter, going 81 yards in five plays, Jake Posey passing to Robert Moss on a 39-yard scoring play. The two-point conversion failed, but the Tigers led 12-0 with 9:22 left in the ball game.

The Tigers scored again late, going 80 yards in 10 plays, Robert Daniels taking it five yards for the score as the clock ran out on an 18-0 Tiger victory.

"Our defense played awesome," said Tiger head football coach Brian Floyd. "This is the first game we've ever been able to match up with them DB (defensive back)-wise, and I think it showed. We held them to 182 total yards, including 130-some passing, and to hold Emmett to 130 yards passing, in my opinion, was a great accomplishment.

"Even though they don't have the weapons they've had in the past, they always have guys and they spread the ball around a lot, so I'm very pleased. The defense did a great job!

"Offensively, we're still making the same mistakes we were in week one. The running backs are running too slow to the hole. We're getting better and it's improving, but still slower than I'd like.

"We need to start putting up more points if we're going to be successful, because we have some very tough games coming up."

Robert Daniels led the Tigers rushing game, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Zacq Hale had 89 yards on five rushes. Tyson Sessions rushed the ball five times for 32 yards, Nick Barrie carried three times for seven yards, Chris Knudson had one yard on one carry, and Jake Posey rushed three times for minus two yards.

Jake Posey completed seven of 20 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Doble caught two passes for 25 yards, Zacq Hale had two catches for 16 yards, Robert Moss had one catch for 39 yards and a touchdown, Tyson Sessions caught one for 11 yards, and Nick Barrie had a catch for minus four yards.

Emmett rushed the ball 26 times for 47 yards, while Husky quarterbacks passed for 135 yards.

Tyson Sessions led the Tigers in tackles with eight. Robert Daniels, Chris Knudson, Zacq Hale and Cal Vivier each had six, Daniels had two interceptions, Knudson had two sacks and two pass deflections. Kyle Clark had five tackles and a sack, and Robert Moss had four tackles.

The Tigers host the Kuna Kavemen for Homecoming Friday night.

Coach Floyd expects a tough battle from the Kavemen.

"They're much better O-line-wise than Emmett was. They come more straight at you, and I think again, we can match up to that.

"They have a good running back and they've got a Durrant, and if he's anything like his brother, he'll be very fast and wiry and hard to tackle. I know they've got a pretty big fullback, and it's going to be a tough game. It's going to be a battle of wills."

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Tiger Field, with the crowning of the Homecoming Queen at halftime.
