10-year-old

girl dies

in tractor

accident

A ten-year-old Grand View girl was killed last Tuesday, July 11, when she fell under the wheels of a tractor being driven by her 13-year-old brother.

Nancy ElizaJane Martin, known as "Eliza," was apparently standing on the wheel well of the tractor, which was being used by her brother to haul an irrigation pipe trailer.

According to the Owyhee County Sheriff's Department, when her brother shifted gears the tractor suddenly bucked, causing her to lose her balance. She fell forward, striking her head on the battery box and then fell to the ground, being crushed under the rear wheel of the tractor. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

The tractor was going at about 10 mph when the accident occurred.

Owyhee County Sheriff's Department officials described it as a "terrible, tragic accident," and have closed their investigation.

Martin, the daughter of Allen "Buffalo" and Debbi Martin of Grand View, would have been in the sixth grade at Grand View Elementary School this fall. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers.

A memorial service, well attended by the shocked community, was held Monday, July 17, at the Rimrock Jr./Sr. High School auditorium.
