Lady Tigers beat Emmett

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Feeling tired and playing short-handed, the Lady Tiger Basketball team stumbled to a 1-7 record this past week.

The girls started the week hosting Emmett. The Lady Huskies poured it on in the second half, pulling away for a 39-21 victory.

Hannah Zamora led the Tigers with 6 points. Emily Moranda had 4 points. Brandie Riggs chipped in 3 points and Jessica Egusquiza, Sammy Dawson, Ashley Kipp and Chantell Crane each added 2 points to help the team.

On Wednesday the team traveled to Nampa to end its summer league play.

The inside game of the Lady Vikings from Middleton proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers as the Lady Vikings won the game 40-28.

Emily Moranda led the Lady Tigers with 10 points. Brandie Riggs and Sammy Dawson each had 6 points, Ashley Kipp added 4 points and Jessica Egusquiza chipped in 2 points to round out the Tiger scoring.

On Friday the girls traveled to Twin Falls to play in the Lady Bruin Classic. First up for the Lady Tigers was the Lady Rams of Highland High School. In a close battle it was missed foul shots that did in the Lady Tigers and fueled a 39-29 loss.

Emily Moranda was high scorer with 10 points while Jessica Egusquiza had 7 points. Sheena Nelson and Chantell Crane each had 4 points and Brandie Riggs chipped in 3 points,

Poor foul shooting was to be a pain in the Tiger's side all weekend. In their next game against Jerome, shooting just 5 of 11 attempts from the line led to a 42-29 defeat of the Mountain Home Tigers by the Jerome Lady Tigers.

Brandie Riggs had 9 points, Jessica Egusquiza had 7 points and Ashley Kipp and Chantell Crane each had 4 points, while Emily Moranda chipped in 2 points for the Lady Tigers.

In their third game Friday night, shooting 9 of 19 from the free throw line did in the Lady Tigers, this time failing to Declo 42-37.

Jessica Egusquiza, playing on an ankle injury, still led the team with 16 points. Emily Moranda had 8 points, Chantell Crane 7 points, and Brandie Riggs, Ashley Kipp and Sheena Nelson each added 2 points for the score.

On Saturday the team opened with a 31-25 victory over Pocatello. Chantell Crane led the Tigers with 10 points. Emily Moranda put in 6 points. Sheena Nelson and Hannah Zamora each had 4 points, Shalamar Enriquez added 3 points and Brandie Riggs and Ashley Kipp each had 2 points to round out the scoring.

The last game of the weekend had the Tigers facing Burley, probably one of the best 4A teams in the state. The Lady Tigers saw how much they still need to improve, falling 58-30 to Burley.

Ashley Kipp and Chantell Crane each had 10 points to lead the Tigers. Jessica Egusquiza, Brandie Riggs, Sheena Nelson, Emily Moranda, and Shalamar Enriquez each had 2 points for the Tigers.

"Even though we had a bad week, with our win/loss record," said coach Brian English, "I feel that we did some good things this past week.

"We played very good man defense against both Highland and Middleton, two teams that have a huge size advantage over us.

"The biggest thing that hurt us this week was our foul shooting. We need to work on being more mentally tough during a game, but that is what summer play is all about."

The girls have practice this Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. then travel to Caldwell for the Caldwell Classic this weekend. The Lady Tigers stand 14-14 overall and 13-8 in tournament play.

Upcoming events are NBC Camp in LaGrande, Ore., July 3-7, and the Anacortes Summer Jam, July 12-17 in Anacortes, Wash.
