Man dies in Exit 90 accident

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Michael L. Ashby, 46, of 504 Caribou Lane, was killed last Thursday when his 2001 Jeep collided with another vehicle on US Highway 30 near the Frontage Road intersection, according to Rick Ohnsman, Public Affairs Officer for the Idaho State Police.

A 2005 Dodge Stratus, driven by Rosio R. Perkins, 23, also of Mountain Home, was headed westbound on US Highway 30 when she attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Frontage Road, an intersections that has been the scene of a number of serious accidents.

According to the ISP Trooper Chris Porupsky, who was first on the scene, Rosio failed to yield to Ashby, who was driving eastbound on I-84 exit ramp 90. The resulting collision was nearly head-on.

After hitting Rosio from the front, Ashby's Jeep overturned and flipped at least once, coming to rest on its wheels. According to Porupsky, no evidence of a seatbelt could be found and he was pronounced dead at the scene, presumably from massive trauma.

Rosio was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

ISP is conducting an ongoing investigation and charges are pending the outcome of that investigation. "We will take as much time as we need to gather all of the information," Porupsky said. "Right now accuracy is more important than speed."

Once the investigation is complete, ISP will turn everything over to the Elmore County Prosecutor's Office, who will determine if charges will be filed.
