Wednesday, May 17, 2006

Although their team scores at district might have left them lower than they might have wanted to be, the Mountain Home Tigers track team is sending nine boys and eight girls to the 4A State Track & Field Championships at BSU this week.

Kacy Barrie, the defending 100 meter high hurdle champion, will be back to defend her title after capturing the event at district at NNU last week. She will also be competing in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, and as a member of both the 4 by 100 meter relay and the medley relay team.

The 4 by 100 meter relay team, made up of Barrie, Sherica Holman, Alyssa Saltzgaber and Emily Moranda took first at district.

The medley relay, which also includes Kristie Sigloh besides Barrie, Holman and Moranda, finished second.

Moranda also qualified in the 300 intermediate hurdles, where she finished second.

Sigloh will also compete in the long jump and the 400 meter dash, after fifth place finishes there at district.

Francesca Hale and Piper Coffin also qualified in the 100 meter hurdles, with second and fifth place finishes, respectively, at district.

Emmett won the girls district competition with 132 points, with Bishop Kelly a close second with 127. Skyview was third with 111, Vallivue fourth with 83 points, two ahead of Mountain Home, Nampa had 79.5 points, Caldwell, 45, and Kuna, 42.5.

Bishop Kelly won the boys competition with 144 points, Nampa was second with 131. Skyview totaled 96, Vallivue, 87, Emmett, 81, Kuna, 75, Mountain Home had 53, and Caldwell, 29.

Nine Mountain Home Tigers are going to state in the 4A boys competition.

The Tigers 4 by 200 meter relay team of Bob Daniels, Chris Knudson, Zacq Hale and Nick Barrie, is state-bound, after a second place effort at district.

Nick O'Briant, Josh Driskell, and Brandon Doble all had third place finishes, which qualified them, O'Briant in the high jump, Driskell in the shot put, and Doble in the 300 meter hurdles.

Brandon Sloan qualified in the 800 meter run, where he finished fourth at district.

Kyle Clark's fifth place effort in the discus qualified him for state.

"We're really pleased," said Tiger head track coach Rich Urquidi. "All of the coaches are pleased with the efforts. We were really happy with the girls 4 by 100. They did an awesome job."

State 4A action gets under way tomorrow (Thursday) at Bronco Stadium at Boise State University in Boise.
