Tennis team earning respect

Last week saw some more improvement by the Mountain Home Tiger tennis team in a busy week of action.

Vallivue 12

Mountain Home 0

Battling the elements as well as a good Vallivue team, the Tigers were blanked by Falcons 12-0 in a match that had an hour rain delay.

Norah Fischer lost in three sets in the #1 girls singles match, 1-6, 7-5, 1-6.

Julie Remington lost the #2 singles match, 3-6, 0-6, and Laura Lothrop dropped the #3 singles match 1-6, 1-6.

Jordan Niksich, Justin Richins and Zach Anderson all lost their boys singles matches in straight sets.

Vallivue dominated the doubles matches, with Breanna White and Daryl Enriquez battling tough in a 1-6, 3-6 loss in #1 girls doubles.

Mountain Home 6

Jerome Tigers 6

The two teams had battled to a 6-6 tie the week before in Mountain Home, and they again battled to a tie last Wednesday at Jerome.

This time Mountain Home swept the boys singles, took two of the three girls singles matches, and split the girls doubles matches.

Jordan Niksich won at #1 boys singles, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. Justin Richins won #2, 6-3, 6-0, and Joshua Lewis won #3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Reed Borgholthaus and Jason Ward dropped the #1 boys doubles match, 4-6, 0-6, and Zach Anderson and Andrew Martin dropped the #2 match, 2-6, 0-6.

Nora Fischer won #1 girls singles, 6-1, 6-4, and Julie Remington won #2 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Christina Gutierrez lost at #3 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 2-6.

Breanna White and Daryl Enriquez won the #1 girls doubles match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Tara Brandenburg and Samantha Martinez lost at #2, 2-6, 0-6.

In mixed doubles, Keth Galloway and Lindsay Horgan lost in three, 2-6, 6-4, 2-6, and Joey Miller and Cristen Hoover lost a close match, 5-7, 4-6.

"Again, there were several close matches that could have gone either way," said Tiger tennis coach Tamzy House.

Nampa 12

Mountain Home 0

Despite getting shut out by the Bulldogs last Thursday at the airbase, the Tigers showed a lot of improvement over the first time when they played at Nampa.

"Although we lost all the matches this time, the scores and number of games won by some of the Tigers were significantly higher than they were the first time, a good improvement indicator," said Coach House.

Jordan Niksich lost the #1 boys singles match, 2-6, 4-6. Julie Remington lost a tough 5-7, 7-5, 4-6 match in the girls #2 singles.

In girls doubles, Breanna White and Daryl Enriquez lost the #1 doubles match, 3-6, 0-6, and Tara Brandenburg and Christina Gutierrez dropped the #2 match, 2-6, 3-6.

In mixed doubles, Keenan Galloway and Lindsay Horgan lost at #1, 3-6, 1-6, and Keth Galloway and Annie Bledsoe battled tough before losing the #2 match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (8-10).

Coach House sent 15 Tigers to the Boise Tennis Invitational individual singles tournament last Friday and Saturday. They played against players from Boise, Centennial, Mountain View and Timberline, as well as Nampa, Caldwell and Vallivue, matched up by how they were seeded from #1 to #9.

"Although rain delays caused havoc with the scheduling of the tournament, with some sites playing while others battled wet courts, the tournament was a great tennis experience for the kids," said Coach House. "They got a chance to play singles against some of the better high school players in the Boise area -- they found out that they could stay in the point with them -- it was a good confidence builder as well as an excellent indicator of what we still need to work on."

Daryl Enriquez and Cristen Hoover were first-round winners in their respective tournaments, and both lost tough matches in their second-round matches.

Breanna White won her first-round consolation match, but lost a heartbreaker consolation final against a girl from Centennial.

Those participating from Mountain Home and the group they were seeded with were: Nora Fischer, #1, Laura Lothrop, #2, Christina Gutierrez, #3, Breanna White, #4, Daryl Enriquez, #5, Annie Bledsoe, #6, Tara Brandenburg, #7, Samantha Martinez, #8, and Cristen Hoover, #9.

Tiger boys participating were Jordan Niksich, #1, Justin Richins, #2, Jason Ward, #4, Reed Borgholthaus, #5, Joey Miller, #6, and Ricky Guadarrama, #7.

"As a coach, it was exciting to see the progress our team is making," said Coach House.
