Arlie Shaw has announced his candidacy to run on the Republican ticket for the District 1 Elmore County Commissioner's seat, currently held by Democrat Mary Egusquiza.

Shaw noted that throughout his life he has had both an interest in public service and a desire to serve.

Retiring after 30 years of employment as an accountant and office manager, he now has time to devote to the pursuit of this dream, he noted.

He said that his expertise would be "especially valuable balancing a multi-million dollar county budget that may be affected by changing property tax laws," adding that he "understands strategic planning and how important it is to develop both short and long term goals for the county."

Shaw said that his years working with groups of people to solve problems in the business world uniquely qualify him to serve in this capacity. He would like to see the commissioners step up as leaders to direct and clarify the growth of the county.

Shaw has been a Mountain Home resident for 7 years, and an Elmore County resident nearly all his life.

He was raised in Grand View, graduating from high school in 1964. He attended college at the College of Idaho and Boise State college, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business.

He worked briefly in Portland, Oregon as a banker. In 1970 he returned to Grand View, where he worked for over 30 years for the Simplot Land & Livestock company in various accounting and management capacities. He served during those years on the school board for School District #365.

He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Elmore Medical Center and Treasurer of the Elmore Medical Center Foundation. He is a member of the City of Mountain Home Planning and Zoning Commission and the Golf Advisory Board.

He also serves as treasurer of Faith Lutheran Church and School, and is a member of the Lion's Club and Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce.

His wife, Linda Shaw, is employed by doctors Koelsch and Starkey as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They have two sons and five grandchildren.

Shaw said he would welcome anyone's support and would "appreciate the opportunity to discuss county concerns with any interested patrons."
