Sloan wins Middelton cross country meet

The Mountain Home Tiger cross country teams fared well at the Middleton Invitational Cross Country Meet held at Purple Sage Golf Course in Caldwell on Sept. 20.

Brandon Sloan won the Middleton event with a time of 16:39.

Vallivue won both the boys and girls team competition.

Vallivue won the boys meet with a score of 39, Middleton was second with 69, just ahead of Vale's 72, with Mountain Home coming in fourth with 97. Nampa Christian was fifth with 107, followed by Payette, 124, and New Plymouth, 125.

Scott Riley came in seventh at Middleton with a time of 17:26. Victor Werner ran a 20:30, Nico Pinque, 21:45, and Wes Haws, 30:54.

Vallivue also won the girls competition, scoring 25 points, with Nampa Christian a close second with 28. Vale was third with 85, Greenleaf Friends Academy, fourth with 122, Middleton right behind with 123, Mountain Home was sixth with 131. Payette was next with 141, followed by Ontario, 162, and New Plymouth, 164.

Cami Pachner ran a 23:57, Kelsie Robinson and Jesse Cameron both came in at 25:16, Ariel Strasser ran a 27:59, Piper Coffin ran a 29:34, Courtney Ashford ran a 29:49, and Sarah Hyde came in with a 30:57.

The Tigers also ran last Saturday in the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park.

Brandon Sloan and Scott Riley both ran in the Elite Division, which featured the top runners from the western United States. Sloan came in at 17:08, which placed him 36th. Riley ran an 18:21, which placed him 93rd.

"The Elite Division had the top runners from the west," said Tiger cross country coach Doug Root. "We had a few teams there from Utah, some from Nevada, some from Oregon, some from Wyoming, it was a large meet."

Tim Whitmarsh ran in the Division I race, which is for 4A and 5A schools. He ran a season best 20:35, which placed him 108th. Nick Pinque and Wes Haws both ran in the JV Division I, with Pinque's time, 23:30, and Haws coming in with a new season best 27:43.

Jessie Cameron, Kelsie Robinson, Ariel Strasser and Sarah Hyde all ran in the Division I freshman girls division, with Cameron running a new personal best of 24:28, Robinson also had a new personal best with 24:47, Strasser ran a 29:19, and Hyde, 31:04. Piper Coffin (27:13) and Courtney Ashford (29:18) both running in the Division I JV girls competition.

Mountain Home's Brett Kohring also ran in the 8th grade division, finishing eighth with a time of 11:40. The eighth-grade course is 3,000 meters.

This week the Tigers go to McCall Friday for the Vandal Invitational on Saturday. Coach Root indicated they are also taking the junior high cross country team to McCall.

"We're doing this to help build team unity between the junior high and high school."
