Tiger golfers show promise

The Mountain Home Tigers finished sixth in the girls and seventh in the boys competition of their first SIC 4A golf tournament of the season at River Birch Golf Course near Emmett on March 7.

Bishop Kelly won the girls competition, shooting a 175. Vallivue was second, at 184. Next came Caldwell with a 196, followed by Nampa at 204, Skyview at 207, Kuna, 229, and Mountain Home at 247. Emmett did not field a girls team.

Maddie Sheils and Kacey Valia, both of Bishop Kelly, won medalist honors, both shooting a 40. Leading the Mountain Home girls was Jimena Garcia with a 49, which tied her for 13th.

Carletta Vaughn shot a 58, Breanna Rodriguez and Princess Young both shot 70s, and Shantell Beasley came in with a 72.

"It's nice to have a full girls team this year," said Tiger golf coach Scott Mederios. "We've got five girls. Jimena Garcia is an exchange student, and she's not bad at all, she shot a 49, and beat several of our guys on the same course on Monday, so she didn't do bad at all. She's played before. The other four, two freshmen and two sophomores, they haven't played at all, so just for them to get out there was good for them to get that first round under their belts."

Bishop Kelly also won the boys competition, shooting a 152, eight shots better than Vallivue. Emmett was third with a 163, followed by Kuna at 166, Caldwell, 173, Nampa, 174, then Mountain Home at 177, and Skyview, 179.

Pat Casabone of Bishop Kelly was medalist, shooting a two under par 35. Joe Rebon led the Mountain Home group with a two over 39, which tied him for seventh. Layne Short and Stephen Bitrick both shot 45s, Nick Trueba came in with a 48, and Monte Reinbold carded a 54.

"I thought it went well," said Coach Mederios of his boys effort. "We're not real experienced again. We don't have a lot of guys that have golfed a lot of years. The kids that we have out there have just been golfing since ninth grade, and we placed in front of Skyview, and we were only three or four shots out of beating a couple more teams, so we're right in there, and my number two golfer didn't golf real well, so when he steps up and golfs like he can, we're going to be right in the mix of things, so I was pretty pleased with that."
