Tiger tennis season opens

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

The Mountain Home Tigers open their tennis season tomorrow (Thursday) with a home conference match against Kuna.

Phil McCluskey is in his second year as head coach of the Tigers, and indicated this year's turnout was "very good. In fact, we had to break up into two separate practices, as we had too many to handle for just one practice, so it's been nice. We actually have about 52 to 53 kids out, so I'm encouraged with the turnout."

While the skill level of his players overall may be a bit lacking, McCluskey feels this year's group is ahead of last year's.

"We're still in need of more experience, however, we are definitely ahead of where we were last year. By the end of the season last year we made some real progress, and as I look at this team now, I'm very encouraged. I'm seeing some very good things from the kids."

McCluskey sees the conference as again being tough, especially with Nampa and Skyview moving back down from the 5A this year.

"We have a very rough conference. Bishop Kelly and Vallivue are very strong, and so is Caldwell. I have yet to see what Nampa and Skyview are going to have, but I'm sure we'll get to know very quickly."

The Tigers open their tennis season tomorrow (Thursday) at the courts at Richard Aguirre Park against Kuna starting at 4 p.m.
