Kids offer tips on "How to Cook a Turkey"

It has become a tradition at the Mountain Home News every Thanksgiving to ask students in local schools to write stories about how to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner.

This year virtually every elementary school in the district took part. Stories were received from: Mr. Holland's and Mrs. Harris' classes at the Base Primary School; Mrs. Ash's, Mrs. Bates' and Ms. Weis' classes at North Elementary School; Mrs. Ybarra's class at West Elementary; Mrs. Cahill's, Mr. Galloway's, Mrs. Hennesey's, Mrs. Ruberry's and Mrs. Knutson's classes at East Elementary. The students ranged in age from six to nine.

The recipes on "How to Cook a Turkey" are provided below, for our reader's enjoyment, just as they were turned in to us, complete with their current expertise in spelling and grammar. It's not recommended that anyone actually follow these recipes, but they give a clue as to how children perceive the work that goes into the nation's celebration of family and thanksgiving.

For privacy reasons, the last names of the students have been omitted.

The first thing is to buy a turky. Next you weigh it. then you stuff the turky. You can put salt on it. Or even steak sauce on it. then you put it in the oven at 1,000 degrees. Then my brings the turkey inside and my dad takes the other stuff that they bought at the store. So my mom puts the turkey on the stove and she starts puts the stove on. Then my mom starts cooking the other stuff. Then my dad come up and he helps my mom. Then my mom and dad let it sit for a little while. Then my mom takes the turkeyy off the stove. My mom waks up rily rley and taks the terky out of the refrigeratr and took all the stufing out and then she puts the stufing in a big pan and then she puts the terky in the oven for four hours and she set the tempercher to 100°F and then she went back to selpp then my sister and I woke up and we went up sters and then are mom woke up so we went back down sters and then are mom woke up are dad and then we hade brefist and we went outside and rode are bikes then are mom cald us in for lunch andthen we went back outside to ask if are friend can play but she waset ther so we went back inside to play the playstashin and then she cald us up for dinner and we had a lot of stuf to eact we hade stufing, terky, chicen, cranbary sos, greenben caserol and we playd a game and went to bed.
