Volleyball team drops two matches

Wednesday, October 6, 2004

The Lady Tigers faced the top two teams in the conference last week and came up short both nights.

Emmett 25, 25, 25

Mountain Home 18, 3, 12

Mountain Home hosted the Lady Huskies from Emmett last Tuesday in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium and lost in three games to the Lady Huskies.

Playing without Jordana Price, the Lady Tigers battled Emmett tough in game one, before losing, 18-25.

Mountain Home could not get any offense going in game two, scoring just three points, losing, 3-25.

The third game looked like the second, with Emmett rolling to a 10-1 lead. The closest Mountain Home came was within seven, at 3-10, as Emmett went on to a 25-12 win to take the match, 3-0.

Despite the lopsided loss, Mountain Home volleyball coach Heather Cherry saw some positives in the loss.

"The girls didn't play horrible. Emmett's a good team and they hit the ball at us and there were a few times when we just got out of position and didn't get in to where we needed to go.

"Our serves were much better. Percentage-wise, we were serving much better. We're setting the ball up better because our passes are better. It's just a matter of playing a really good team on a night when we were suffering the loss of one of our players, and they banged it at us, and we didn't do poorly."

Ali Hillman had two kills and a block, and Paula Barrientos had six assists.

Skyview 25, 25, 25

Mountain Home 10, 15, 13

Mountain Home traveled to Skyview last Thursday night, where they lost in three straight to the top team in the league.

The Lady Tigers started slow, and dropped the first game, 10-25, lost the second, 15-25, and dropped game three, 13-25.

"We played better than we did against Emmett, so that was a positive thing," said Coach Cherry.

"We moved better and covered the floor a little bit better and didn't have nearly as many balls drop on us like we did on Tuesday, so I was pleased with that, but Skyview is amazing."

Jordana Price served up four aces, had four kills and one block at Skyview. Ali Hillman and Dani Dean both had three kills, and Paula Barrientos had five assists.

Despite being winless in 10 conference volleyball matches, Coach Cherry hopes for a breakthrough this week against Bishop Kelly and Caldwell.

"I'm definitely looking at our games this week as confidence builders, in terms of the girls maybe having a little bit more success with the points."

The Lady Tigers hosted Bishop Kelly last (Tuesday) night, and travel to Caldwell tomorrow (Thursday) night.

"It would really be nice for us to go in with the attitude that we can win, and I really believe that this group of girls, that if they believe they can, they can do it. It's tough when you've been losing over and over, to get out of that mindset, but they can, so I'm hopeful for this week."
