A four-run seventh inning led to a 13-9 American Legion baseball win for the Glenns Ferry Orioles at Eagle on June 28.

The Orioles scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, only to have the Vipers plate six in the bottom half of the inning to lead 8-4.

Four more Oriole runs tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the fourth, but Eagle scored in the bottom of the inning to go up 9-8. Glenns Ferry tied it in the fifth, and rallied for four runs in the seventh to pull away for the win.

"It was a like a football game there for a while, going back and forth," said Orioles head coach Denis Uhl. "Jason Simons came in and shut them down the last three innings and we came back and got some big hits and won it."

Michael DesPres and Scott Arellano both had two hits for the Orioles, DesPres had two RBIs, and Arellano had a solo home run. Jason Simons had a triple and two RBIs, Brian Fields a hit, and David Zito, Bubba Johnson and Laif Morrison all had RBIs.

The Orioles found themselves down 6-0 before they rallied back to make a game of it, but fell two runs short in a league game on June 29 in Glenns Ferry.

"It was anybody's game throughout the whole game," said Coach Uhl. "We came back and made a game of it the last couple innings or so, but the first four innings we couldn't get anything going and left too many runners on base. We let one get away from us."

Scott Arellano had three hits and a RBI, Aaron Swartz had two hits and a RBI, Brett Young and David Zito had hits and RBIs, and Jason Simons and Michael DesPres also had hits. David Zito suffered the loss, despite giving up just four hits in three-plus innings. Michael DesPres gave up just one hit the rest of the way.

Caldwell 1, 6

The Orioles came away with a sweep of the Caldwell Bobcats in a doubleheader played in Glenns Ferry on June 30.

In the first game, Jason Simons went the distance, striking out 10 batters while allowing just one run to improve to 4-1 on the season. He also had a hit and RBI at the plate.

Brett Young, Michael DesPres and Bubba Johnson also had hits, Young and DesPres had RBIs, and David Zito also knocked in a run on a suicide squeeze bunt.

The Orioles plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 6-5 deficit and win the nightcap 9-6.

Brian Fields, who relieved Brett Young on the mound in the fourth inning, picked up the win, and helped himself out with two hits and three RBIs.

Scott Arellano had two hits and an RBI. Jason Simons had a hit and two RBIs. Jeff Hernandez had two hits including a double, Shey Titus had a hit and RBI, and David Zito, Michael DesPres and Brett Young also had hits.

"That's pretty nice," said Coach Uhl after the sweep of the Bobcats.

"We played them earlier in the year and split with them, and tonight we took two in two good games. I was really pleased, particularly in the second game, we started executing and manufacturing some runs there, and then got some good clutch hits. We had some good pitching, too.

"Jason (Simons) did a good job the first game, and in the second game, we got some innings out of Brett Young for the second time this year, and he gave us three pretty good innings, and Brian Fields came in and really did an excellent job, so I was really pleased!"

Fields struck out six in his 3 2/3 innings of work and evened his record at 2-2.

The Orioles improved to 13-8 on the season, and 7-8 in league play.
