The Glenns Ferry Orioles managed a split of an American Legion baseball doubleheader at Caldwell last week, after losing earlier in the week at Emmett.

Glenns Ferry 2

The Glenns Ferry Orioles suffered their first loss of the young American Legion baseball season with their 11-2 loss at Emmett on June 7. The Orioles committed five errors on the night -- three in the sixth inning when the Huskies scored seven runs.

The Orioles took advantage of a throwing error by Emmett to score two runs in the second inning, but Emmett scored two of their own in the third inning to tie it, and added two more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

"We were missing two of our guys tonight -- two good ball players -- but we still have some good boys here," said Orioles head coach Denis Uhl after the game. "For five innings, we played really tough ball, but in the sixth, all of a sudden we couldn't catch a cold, and things just snowballed.

"I think they only had something like two earned runs for the game, and you can't give up that many unearned runs and expect to be competitive at this level."

Glenns Ferry managed just five hits off Emmett's Casey McCarthy, with Mike Anchustegui getting three of them. Brian Fields and Brett Young had the other hits.

The Orioles were at Caldwell on June 9 to face the Caldwell Bobcats, where they split a pair of one-run ball games. The Bobcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh of the first game, to hand Glenns Ferry's Scott Arellano the loss. Arellano gave up just three hits, but two of them came in the seventh when the Bobcats scored the game-winner.

Arellano struck out seven Caldwell batters. Brett Young had two hits, including a double and an RBI.

In the second game, an RBI-ground-out by Justin Case scored Jeff Hernandez with what proved to be the game-winner in the top of the seventh. Hernandez had led off the inning with a single.

Scott Arellano had two hits in the game, including a triple. Brian Fields also had a triple. Michael DesPres picked up the win in relief of David Zito, replacing Zito on the mound with one out in the sixth and two Bobcats on base.

"We're really struggling at the plate lately," said Orioles coach Denis Uhl. "We need to be a little more disciplined at the plate, but our pitching, we've pitched well enough to win in every game we've played. If our pitching stays strong, and our bats come along, I think we'll be okay."
