Lady Tigers score two wins

Wednesday, March 31, 2004

When one thinks of Spring Break, one thinks of taking some time off, kicking back and relaxing, right?

Not so for the Mountain Home Lady Tigers who played six softball games in five days, coming away with two wins out of six games.

Mountain Home 16, 2

Boise 15, 18

The Lady Tigers went to Boise last Tuesday and came away with a split of a non-conference doubleheader with Boise.

In the first game, the Lady Tigers got their bats warmed up and built up a 16-4 lead heading into bottom of the six, scoring three runs in the first and second, seven in the fourth, and three more in the sixth.

But Boise scored seven in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game going, and added four more in the seventh before Michelle Reynolds struck out Tiffany Lower to end the inning with the tying run on second base, the Lady Tigers winning 16-15.

"It was quite a ball game," agreed Coach Memmelaar after the game. "We could have ended early, but we made some serious mental mistakes in the sixth inning to help them come back. I was really pleased with our hitting. We've worked on that, and it showed."

Michelle Reynolds went the distance for the win, her second of the season, striking out eight, walking seven. She had a great day at the plate as well, collecting four hits, including a double and triple, driving in five runs.

Christa Stanton also had four hits, and had an RBI. Des Walden had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs. Cathy Guilbert had three hits and scored two runs.

Krista Gorman had two hits and an RBI. Katey Woods also had two hits, Paula Doerr had a three-run triple, and Carmen Santy had a two-run single.

In the second game, Boise scored 10 runs in the second, and six in the third to roll to the lopsided 18-2 five inning win. Katey Woods had the only hit for Mountain Home off Sarah Estep. Krista Gorman and Michelle Reynolds had RBIs for Mountain Home.

Carmen Santy suffered the loss, giving up 10 runs in two innings work. She had one strikeout and one walk. Michelle Reynolds worked the final two innings, striking out one and walking two.

Minico 3

Mountain Home 1

The Lady Tigers opened play at the Kuna Softball Extravaganza last Friday against Minico, and out-hit the Lady Spartans 5-2, but came up short on the scoreboard, 3-1.

Ali Hillman gave up just two hits, striking out two and walking four, but suffered the loss. She also had two hits at the plate. Krista Gorman, Carmen Santy and Michelle Reynolds also had hits, Santy had an RBI.

Mountain Home 9

Vallivue 3

A five-run first inning helped the Lady Tigers jump off to a lead over Vallivue, a lead they held all game, thanks to a four-hitter tossed by Michelle Reynolds.

Reynolds helped herself out at the plate, going four-for-four, with three RBIs. Christa Stanton had two hits and knocked in four runs. Ali Hillman had two hits, and Krista Gorman and Des Walden also had hits. Walden also had an RBI.

Nampa 11

Mountain Home 3

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to 5-2 first inning lead over Mountain Home in Saturday action at the Kuna Softball Extravaganza.

Ali Hillman, who struck out five and walked 12, suffered the loss. She also had one of the four hits Mountain Home had. Krista Gorman, Michelle Reynolds, Ashley Kipp and Kristin Brandli had the others. Reynolds knocked in two runs, Gorman had one RBI.

Emmett 4

Mountain Home 0

The Lady Tigers managed just two hits off Jodie Zillner. Michelle Reynolds pitched well, striking out seven and walking six, but suffered the loss, her second against three wins.

Des Walden and Ali Hillman collected Mountain Home's only hits off Zillner.

"I thought we had a good weekend outing," said Coach Memmelaar of their efforts at Kuna.

"We picked up another win, and played some good games. We had one game where we didn't hit very well -- that was against Nampa -- but other than that, they hit well off Emmett, who we'll see later, so they played a nice game against them, and winning one over Vallivue was a good thing, because we'll see them later on, and they played a good game against Minico, also, so, all in all, it was a good outing for us."

The Lady Tigers are 3-8 on the season, returning to action Friday afternoon when they go to Glenns Ferry for a non-conference game with the Lady Pilots. They open SIC 4A conference play April 6 at home against Kuna.
