Accident kills Boise man on I-84

Wednesday, October 8, 2003

A Boise man became the latest in a string of recent fatalities on I-84 between Mountain Home and Boise, when he was ejected after rolling his car near milepost 83 Saturday.

Killed in the single-vehicle accident was Robert J. Diaz, 49.

Elmore County Sheriff's Department authorities said Diaz was traveling eastbound on the interstate in a 1988 Mitsubishi van at about 8 p.m. Saturday when witnesses said he sped up to make a pass in the left lane, ran off the shoulder of the road, overcorrected, and rolled the car four times before it came to rest on the right shoulder of the road.

Diaz was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown more than 50 feet from the vehicle. He was dead at the scene authorities said, adding "there was a lot of alcohol present" in the vehicle and that may have been a factor in the accident, although toxicology tests have yet to confirm that. The investigation is continuing.
