Lady Tigers still seek first win

Wednesday, October 1, 2003

Coming to a volleyball court near you: a Mountain Home Lady Tiger victory.

Hopefully it came last (Tuesday) night, as the Lady Tigers hosted Kuna in front of the hometown crowd in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium. As well as Mountain Home is starting to play, it should come soon.

It did not come last week, although the Lady Tigers played well against both Emmett and Vallivue on the road.

Emmett 25, 25, 25

Mountain Home 20, 23, 12

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers put together what has to be one of their best efforts of the season last Tuesday night when they lost a close 3-0 match at Emmett.

Mountain Home coach Heather Cherry certainly was pleased with their efforts.

"We really played them close. The third game score might not have been a good indication, but the girls really played well. We were moving quick, plugging the holes, blocking the ball, getting the tips -- if we had played this well in our earlier matches, we could have come away with some wins. It's a good sign."

Paula Doerr had five kills and a block at Emmett. Kim Gulley and Shelby Wickmark both had two kills and two blocks. Amanda Bitterman had one kill and one block. Rachelle Garland had six assists, and Paula Barrientos had four assists.

Vallivue 25, 18, 25, 25

Mountain Home 17, 25, 20, 14

Mountain Home played the Lady Falcons tough at Vallivue last Thursday night in conference volleyball.

The Lady Tigers tied the match at 1-1, taking game two, and played close before losing game three.

Coach Cherry said her Lady Tigers lost their aggressiveness in the fourth game.

"Other than the fourth game," said Coach Cherry, "it was a great match. In that fourth game, we got blocked three times in a row by Jenny Gross, and after that we didn't seem to play as aggressive at the net. But it was really a good match. The girls are continuing to get better."

Everyone contributed in the effort at Vallivue.

Shelby Wickmark had eight kills and 21 digs. Krista Gorman had 23 digs. Kim Gulley had one kill and 16 digs. Paula Doerr had two kills and three blocks. Amanda Bitterman had three kills and seven digs. Tiffany Robins had three kills. Rachelle Garland had eight assists, Paula Barrientos had seven assists, and Christa Stanton had two kills.

The Lady Tigers were home against Kuna last (Tuesday) night, and start second round conference action tomorrow (Thursday) night at Caldwell.
