Man dies in rollover below dam

A Mountain Home man died and his son was transported by helicopter to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise after their pickup rolled approximately 600 feet down a steep embankment near the Anderson Dam power plant last week.

The accident occurred Tuesday, Sept. 23, around 6 p.m., when Alan Marriage and his son Austin were traveling uphill on the dam road towards Highway 20.

Early Wednesday morning, Sept. 24, the Elmore County Sheriff's Department received a request to locate an overdue father and son who had not returned home from an outing.

Alan Marriage, 53, and his son Austin, 26, both of Mountain Home, had left for a day outing in the Featherville area on Tuesday morning. When the two did not come home, Alan's wife became concerned. She asked the Sheriff's department for help in locating the two men. Deputies were checking the area when Elmore County dispatch received a call about a pickup that had left the roadway and rolled down the embankment.

Austin, a passenger, spent the night at the accident scene. In the morning, he was able to make his way down river where he was able to attract the attention of an employee at the power plant who notified the Elmore County dispatch. He had sustained multiple injuries and was flown by helicopter to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise.

Elmore County Sheriff Rick Layher said the driver had been thrown from the vehicle as it rolled down the steep mountain side before it came to a rest approximately 70 feet above the river.

Because of the rugged terrain, rescue crews found it a challenge to retrieve the vehicle and the driver. They traveled by boat across the river and climbed up the hillside to Alan Marriage's location. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
