Carol Dalton

Carol A. Dalton, a lifelong resident of Mountain Home, has announced her candidacy for mayor.

She becomes the third mayoral candidate for the Nov. 4 city election. Incumbent Mayor Dave Jett and former councilman Joe McNeal also are running for the post.

Dalton said she was running because "Maybe I can do something for the community.

"You listen to people talk about how unhappy they are, and I can at least listen to people."

She said Mayor Jett "just isn't a people person, and I think it takes a public relations person to do the job."

She said her strengths were in public relations, adding, "I'm a good talker. There isn't a soul in this town that would argue with that."

She said her main goal, if elected, would be to "fill in the empty spaces in downtown," but added that she planned no major changes in city operations if elected.

Dalton was born in Mountain Home and graduated from MHHS. She received a BA degree from Boise College with the first class of four-year graduates as Boise Junior College was moving towards becoming Boise State University.

Dalton used her degree to teach elementary students for 35 uninterrupted years, 32 of those in Mountain Home and on MHAFB.

Dalton's father, William Boykin, and her grandfather, Gus Nelson, owned the Ice House that was located where the new park for the underpass is now and the two men started the school bus system for Mountain Home. Dalton's mother, Dorothy worked for First Security Bank until her failing eyesight forced her to retire.

Dalton is a 34-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and in 2001 was elected Western Division National Vice-President. That afforded her the opportunity to travel all of the western departments of the Auxiliary except the Philippines as the liaison between them and the national organization.

She is also a member of La Femmes and 8&40, which are other organizations affiliated with The American Legion and Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, Elkettes, Elmore County Historical Foundation, and is a life member of the NEA.

In December, Carol and her husband Francis (Frank) will celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary. She has 2 step-children and 6 step-grandchildren.
