Anderson named AFAD Grand Marshal

Wednesday, August 21, 2002

For 25 years he has been quietly working behind the scenes at every Air Force Appreciation Day barbecue -- longer than most any other individual. So it is only fitting that he now be recognized and honored for his efforts by being named as Grand Marshal for the 2002 AFAD Parade.

Frank Anderson seems ideally suited to serve as Grand Marshal in a year when the theme is "Patriotism, Pride and Prosperity."

Anderson was born at Mountain Home Air Force Base. He grew up and attended schools in Mountain Home and in Oregon.

He showed his patriotism when his schooling was cut short because he saw a need to serve his country. In 1977 he joined the U.S. Army and spent five years on active duty. He then completed his 20-year military career serving in the Army National Guard before retiring in 1997.

It was during this period Anderson completed his schooling, earning his GED.

Anderson takes pride in being a member of the local extrication team. He has served as a member of the Mountain Home Rescue Unit for 20 years.

Although the menu for the AFAD barbecue has changed through the years, there has been one constant. Patrons can always be assured of fresh cooked corn on the cob. Frank has been a part of the corn cooking crew for 25 years. His prosperity is reflected in his family and in his sense of humor. He can be a practical joker at times. He likes to play with other people's cars -- nothing mean or destructive, just fun things to get a laugh.

His wife, Stacey, jokingly claims she is the one who deserves the recognition for putting up with him for all the years. Maybe he will let her ride with him as he leads the parade on Sept. 7 as the 2002 AFAD Parade Grand Marshal.
