Driver Hits 100+ mph in 71-Mile Idaho I-84 Pursuit Before Crashing in the Median
A 71-mile police pursuit on Interstate 84 from Elmore County to Payette County ended Monday morning when a fleeing driver crashed into the median after troopers disabled his vehicle with spike strips, according to Idaho State Police.

Idaho State Police said the pursuit began at 11:57 a.m. Jan. 19 when a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Toyota Highlander near mile marker 80 in Elmore County. The driver did not stop and continued westbound on I-84, leading law enforcement through multiple counties before the vehicle was forced to a halt near mile marker 9 in Payette County. According to Idaho State Police, the incident started when a trooper initiated a traffic stop on the westbound Highlander on I-84 at mile marker 80 in Elmore County. The driver failed to pull over and eluded authorities on the interstate, Idaho State Police said. The vehicle traveled at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour during the pursuit. Idaho State Police reported that the driver navigated around several sets of spike strips deployed along the route. Multiple local agencies assisted state troopers during the 71-mile pursuit. Spiked tires led to a crash in Payette County, Idaho. The chase ended on I-84 at mile marker 9 in Payette County after troopers successfully deployed spike strips.
After the vehicle’s tires were spiked, the driver swerved and the Toyota crashed into the median, according to Idaho State Police. Troopers took the driver, a 29-year-old man from Salem, Oregon, into custody. Idaho State Police said he was arrested on suspicion of felony eluding, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Authorities also reported an outstanding felony warrant for the man. Idaho State Police said the incident remains under investigation. Other recent I-84 incidents under ISP investigation Idaho State Police have investigated several other serious incidents on I-84 in recent months. On Nov. 10, 2025, one driver died and another was hospitalized after a head-on collision on I-84 in Elmore County. Idaho State Police also investigated a fatal wrong-way crash on I-84 near Mountain Home.
