The History of St. Patrick’s Day
A tradition that is felt deeply in the American people, St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in the states since before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The feast day originally honoured and celebrated St. Patrick on the day of his estimated death.
According to History, the first parade honoring the Saint was held by a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida, back in 1601. The celebration was organized by the colony’s Irish Vicar Ricardo Artur. From there, the Saint’s Day was celebrated up and down the coast by a wide range of Irishmen, from Irish-American descendants, all the way to Irish soldiers serving for the English Crown. All leading to the celebration that is shared by both the religious and the secular communities.
