Shooting in Owyhee County Leaves One Dead, One Arrested

Friday, June 9, 2023

Late at night on Thursday June 8th, Owyhee County Deputies were dispatched to hot pools off Cattle Drive Road in Bruneau. Following a dispute between two individuals, a man and a woman, the man—later identified by police as Manuel Jose Cabrera, 24, of Mountain Home, ID—shot the woman. The woman, a 39 year old from Ada County, later succumbed to her injuries. The Elmore County Sheriff's office and the Idaho State police responded to provide support to Owyhee County. Police rendezvoused at a BLM gate outside of the area until a sufficient number of units arrived. Dispatch remained in contact with Cabrera and his companion who was present at the time of the shooting.

It is believed that the 911 call was placed by Cabrera's companion who was also taken into custody. The two had returned to their vehicle and were in communication with dispatchers. Dispatchers stated that the suspects were compliant and secured the weapon in their vehicles center console. The suspects also complied with dispatchers instructions to lay on the ground face down with their hands on the ground in front of their vehicle's headlights until police arrived. As an Elmore County Deputy maintained a soft perimeter, police moved in on the suspect and his companion. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
