Honoring all who served
Distinguished American writer Joseph Campbell once contended, ““A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. Who better, then, could we designate as heroes, but the men and women who have sacrificed their comforts, freedoms, safety, and even lives, to defend our freedoms in times of war and peace.
According to the United States Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, roughly 26% of Elmore County residents are veterans. Just short of 4,000 individuals (not including our active duty airmen and women on the base) answered the call to serve their nation and defend our freedoms. Our gratitude for these individuals must not and cannot be overstated.
The day on which we band together, clad in our red, white, and blue is no randomly selected day; the date selected for Veterans Day serves as an echo of November 11th, 1918 when “at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month” the fighting of World War I ended with the signing of an armistice.
