In my last article we introduced the persistent rumors that there are tunnels under the streets of Mountain Home.

Many pioneer era towns have tunnel stories. In Pendleton, Oregon you can take a tunnel tour under the streets and buildings downtown. Boise and Odgen, Utah have long standing tunnel lore, but no tours. A common thread to all these stories is a Chinese origin to the tunnels.

My search for Mountain Home’s tunnels led me to Joe Fortner. He was part of a team that extensively investigated tunnels in 2018. Along with Joe, the team included Rick Layher, Aly Layher, and Debbie Shoemaker. I was given complete access to this team’s file, and their findings follow.
