Xeriscaping Basics for a Beginner

As our local community’s concerns about water availability, storage and judicious use become more and more prominent for the future, we may need to adapt our strategic thinking when it comes to the future of home landscaping. The objective behind Xeriscaping is to create a viable long-term solution for water scarcity for communities. Xeriscaping, not to be confused with zeroscaping, is derived from the Greek “xero” and is defined as “an environment or habitat containing little moisture, very dry”. While on the other hand, zeroscaping, would literally mean nothing, a bare landscape, just rocks or another hardscape choice for a homeowner. Most xeriscape landscape choices include the use of native plants to the area, e.g. those that are adapted for a drier sagebrush steppe desert climate and thrive in such an environment.
