An Elmore County sheriff's deputy escaped serious injury after his patrol car was struck from behind as local law enforcement dealt with multiple reports of crashes and slideoffs on the interstate Jan. 18.

A mixture of snow and frozen rain, combined with temperatures dropping below the freezing point, made for treacherous conditions between Mountain Home and Boise and contributed to multiple jack-knifed semis and vehicles sliding off the road, according to sheriff's department officials.
