Reader proposes community garden to help those in need

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Dear editor:

In my humble opinion (and everyone has one!) I believe we should start a community vegetable garden for all to enjoy when they help maintain it. The city has lots of land that could be used and would be helpful to our citizens and our environment.

I am disabled and receive state help with food, but can see that this venue is sorely overtaxed. If we start a garden we can man it with food stamp recipients, welfare recipients, juvenile detention and prison detainee's. I do think the prison at Mountain Home City Police Department should have their own vegetable garden to help feed the inmates.

Just a thought that I believe we can all get behind, and ensure GMO free and healthy food to our community.

Before anyone says it, I seriously doubt this would affect local growers as we would not be harvesting enough to effect their economy.

You help to get things done here in town so I am hoping this is something you would promote in our community!

Thanks for reading,

Editor's note: The city police do not maintain a prison. The county does maintain a jail.
