Former base housing units gain new life under fed plan

The first of 15 homes from Mountain Home Air Force Base were transferred to the Ely-Shoshone Tribe in late December as part of Operation Walking Shield. It took workers nearly a month to disassemble the single-story units to prepare them for the move from southern Idaho to eastern Nevada.
Following a trek stretching hundreds of miles over two states, the first of 15 homes from Mountain Home Air Force Base are seeing new life through a program aimed at helping Native American tribes.
In December, the first of these modular homes left the base for the Ely-Shoshone Tribe in eastern Nevada as part of a federal program known as Operation Walking Shield.
The ongoing initiative involving a handful of military bases seeks to address chronic overcrowding and homeless situations facing those living on reservations across the western United States.
