Meeting will look at safe routes to schools

Monday, May 9, 2011

A town hall meeting will be held Tuesday night to explore making routes to schools safer.

The event will be held at Hacker Middle School beginning at 6 p.m. Use the front entrance.

The meeting is open to parents, representatives of civic groups and "anyone who wants to find out what it's all about," said Barbara Checketts, who is organizing the meeting.

"We've been trying to get this program started in Mountain Home for some time," Checketts said, but the acquisition of a grant from the Safe Route program in Boise is now helping it get off the ground.

The program will focus on identifying ways to improve walking routes for children attending East Elementary and Hacker Middle Schools.

The grant money will be used to help develop a plan that could be used as a blueprint to improve sidewalks, crossings, stop lights and signs.

  • How about putting a walking bridge over American Legion? It can have the name of the Tigers painted across it-our high school team and the kids wouldnt need a crossing gaurd. Kids would be safe. Traffic and kids wouldnt have to wait for each other-a win win!! What a nice entry into town showing pride in our high school's teams. City banners would be able to be hung there for advertising-Home Coming, Christmas lights, Verteran's Day, Independence Day, and etc. Tall enough that the semi trucks bringing goods into town could pass underneath.

I love that idea TickTock!! My husband and I have bared witness to so many close-calls betweens motor-vehicles that fail to yield and school children. Just the other day a mini van almost hit a young mother who was pushing a baby stroller across the cross walk....all we could do was watch it unfold...such a close call that even the van had to pull over and catch their breadth afterwards......somethings got to change, and your idea is about the best yet.

  • walking bridge....terrible. driver need to just pay attention and wait for the people crossing to be completely out of the crosswalk. and the people walking need to payattention for cars
