Cross country season starts during Saturday's mud run

The Mountain Home Tigers cross country team opened its season last Saturday at Firth for the Firth Mud Run.

The Mountain Home girls squad finished second out of 13 teams competing. Star Valley, Wyo., won the girls competition with 48 points, Mountain Home was second with 74.

Mountain Home's top five runners all finished in the top 20, led by Jordan Vivier, who finished 12th with a time of 26:09.99.

Sarah Richins was 13th (26:26.60), Shelby McHugh, 18th (27:44.24), Haley Schaefer, 19th (27:44.59), and Kacee Cameron, 20th (27:50.62). Ashley Mayberry finished 37th, McKenzie Dorr, 38th, Starley Dodge, 129th and Katie Urquidi, 130th.

"It was a fun race and the girls did well," said Tiger cross country coach Doug Root. "We had a great pack going."

Mountain Home finished fifth in the boys competition, which had 12 teams competing. Teton came in first with 22 points, Challis was second with 66, Star Valley, third, with 99, New Plymouth, fourth with 113, and Mountain Home, fifth, with 119.

Joe Gutierrez led the Mountain Home boys, finishing 13th, with a time of 21:44.25. Jon Dodge came in 32nd, Gavin Cline, 35th, Dylan Johnson, 36th,, Colby Hall, 39th, Taylor Croft, 48th, Cory Pinque, 50th, Perry Savage, 51st, Ruben Gaytan, 59th, Daniel Courtright, 84th, and Doug Watkins, 85th.

"The boys did very well," said Coach Root. "We were kind of surprised where they finished, but we're just going to get stronger. Jon Dodge, a freshman kid, ran in our number two position and did a really outstanding job."

The Tigers go to Caldwell this Thursday to run in the Caldwell Invitational.

"We go to Caldwell to run against the big boys," said Coach Root. "There we'll get to see just how good we possibly are."
