Kaeo Doronio, a senior at MHHS, broke the school record for wrestling victories with his 7-0 performance during the Dick Fleischman Invitational Tournament held in Pocatello last Thursday night.

Doronio, broke the mark of 143 wins, set by Johnny Nunez from 2000-2003 (overall record 143-23). Nunez remarkably had scored 100 of his 143 wins by pins.

For his performance in the tournament, Doronio took home a gold medal and a champions T-shirt from the event.

"It was pretty exciting. I felt really proud of myself and that I accomplished a lot," said Doronio on breaking Nunez's record.

Doronio, a member of the elite "Century Club," since winning his 100th match during his junior year, will soon be immortalized on the "Century Club" plaque, a plaque located outside the school's gymnasium inside a trophy case filled with several other trophies the team has won previously.

Assistant wrestling coach Scott Mederios praised Doronio on his accomplishment.

"The amazing thing about this record is that he did it at the varsity level the whole time. To get that many wins at the varsity level is just outstanding."

Following meets against Bishop Kelly and Jerome, Doronio will compete in the district tournament. The top finishers will qualify for the Idaho State Championships to be held at Pocatello from Feb. 26-28.

In his final year, Doronio looks to go out with a victory in this year's event, a feat that eluded in both his sophomore and junior year when he finished third and fourth, respectively, at state.

After graduation, Doronio plans on pursuing his wrestling career by wrestling for the United States Air Force.
