AEHI gets chance to refute critics at final hearing tonight

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Members of Elmore County, and the surrounding area, have made it clear after three county planning and zoning hearings that they oppose Alternate Energy Holdings, Inc.'s plan to rezone approximately 1,345 acres of Argicultural A zoned property to heavy industrial in order to build a nuclear power plant on the land.

The commission heard from 35 people who spoke in opposition of the rezone request Wednesday night. An additional three people submitted testimony in writing that was read to the commission.

Their testimony came a week after the commission heard from 13 groups opposing the plan.

On Oct. 8, three members of the community spoke in favor of the land rezone after the applicant presented its case to the commission earlier that evening.

AEHI will have its chance to dispute claims made during the three previous hearings during tonight's hearing, but no new evidence will be submitted from this point on.

The commission will decide after hearing the rebuttal whether or not to make a recommendation to allow the rezone request that night or to schedule a special hearing to do so. The commission has until Nov. 11 to issue a recommendation and intends to meet that deadline.
