From Left to Right: Janna Beauclair, Shae Burns and Kate Ackerson with the 2008 Elmore County Fair Grand Marshall, Beverly Lucia.

Beverly Lucia has been named as the 2008 Elmore County Fair and Rodeo Grand Marshall.

She has been involved with the Elmore County Fair for a number of years as the open class manager. "She brings endless ideas and enthusiasm to a job that often goes without notice," said Fair Director Kate Ackerson.

"Beverly has played an integral part in making the open class section of the fair successful for many years. She has put in many hours making the exhibit hall a fun place to visit each year. She is constantly endeavoring to make the hall a better place for visitors by painting the floor, decorating the ladies bathroom, sewing a canopy for much needed shade.

"She has also spearheaded the making of display shelves, created professional signs for each department, made displays of local artisans collectibles, and coordinated with business and volunteers to make prizes memorable each year," Ackerson said.

Beverly Maude Wright was born in Vermont on July 7, 1935. She met her husband, George Lucia, in high school at the Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax, Vt. They were married in 1954.

George joined the Air Force and they spent the next 20 years in Nebraska, Vermont, Texas, and finally in Idaho. They had four children, Diana, George, Penny and Scott.

Settling in Mountain Home upon retirement, they opened a business in Glenns Ferry.

Lucia opened a small gift shop she called the Gift Box in 1976 with ten other women. Following that three-year venture, she opened her own shop called Quilts and Other Comforts in 1984. That is still in business today.

Over the past 24 years she added the Yogurt Shoppe after her granddaughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes, as there were no other frozen yogurt shops in the area and her granddaughter could not have ice cream. She then added Nature Valley Health Food Store. Her shop is now located at Mulberry Place in the Stardust Plaza with three other partners.

She was involved with the Girl Scouts as a leader with both her children and grandchildren. She made costumes for her daughter, granddaughters and great-granddaughter when they were involved in dance, along with the rest of the dance team.

"Her family would say that Bev was always there for classroom parties and birthdays with wonderful homemade goodies," Ackerson said. "She made dresses, blankets, and Barbie clothes for her grandchildren, and to this day makes breakfast on Sunday morning for her family and anyone else who shows up for as long as they can remember."

Bev is a founding member of the Mountain Home Farmers Market. She has been involved with the OSC thrift shop on Mountain Home Air Force Base for 11 years as a weekly volunteer. In 2003 she was chosen The Volunteer Angel of the Year for her service to the United States Air Force community.

"For Bev Lucia, no job is too little or too large," Ackerson said. "She takes on anything she sees with great devotion, and that is why the Fair Board is honored to have her as the 2008 Elmore County Fair Grand Marshall."

  • Bev is a good choice. She is an ambitious woman that has done a lot for the community and is still doing a lot for the community. I would hate to try to follow her - even for one day. Congratulations Bev.
