Voters go to polls Tuesday for city races

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Voters will go to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 6, to cast ballots in the city elections.

The mayor's position and two open council posts are open.

For city council, voters will cast ballots for two candidates. The two who earn the most votes, not necessarily a majority, will be elected.

Four council candidates are on the ballot, none of them incumbents. The four are: Geoff Schroeder, Albert Clement, Russ Anderson and Mitch Prouty. In addition, C.D. Houston filed papers just before last week's deadline to seek election as a write-in candidate.

For the mayor's race, Councilman Tom Rist is challenging incumbent Mayor Joe B. McNeal.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The only voting location is at the city library.

Absentee voting is available at city hall from now until 5 p.m. on Nov. 5.

  • Hmmm...Rist vs. McNeal...sort of like Tweedle-dee vs. Tweedle-dum.

  • I would think it's okay for residents of this community, who work and vote and participate in it, who might be better at the sometimes justified criticism of our people and city. I think Rist would be better at the job of mayor, understanding that we have a mayor/city council government, not merely a mayor, but both individuals are very, very good men.

You evidently chose to leave, and that is your right, but you seem to have an inordinate interest in what goes on here. Why don't you come back and be part of the solution to the future of Mtn Home instead of sitting wherever you are, just making jabs? You are obviously an intelligent man.

Voting and participating are positive actions. I encourage anyone to try. Sometimes it can be discouraging, but sometimes people get it right.

And that's it for me again. I've said all that I intend to about the election. When I get involved with postings I neglect other aspects of my life. It's intoxicating.

  • Thanks for the input, senior lady. But sounds like you don't quite understand how this whole Internet thing works. I am free to make postings and give my opinion no matter where I live.

I used to work in Mt. Home, at this very paper in fact, and yes, I do take an interest in stories like this because I was once very much involved. I have since moved on and have no plans of returning. If you don't like what I post, I suggest you don't read it.

Good luck with the election though, I hope it works out for you.

  • Never said you couldn't voice your opinion; it's as good as mine or anyone else's. (I especially appreciate what you said about pitbulls being able to be trained to be loving pets, that it depends on their training.)

I guess I'm just curious about why you care, that's all, and of course, that's absolutely none of my business. Sorry.

Maybe you could have made a difference here if you'd stayed long enough.

  • Perhaps I could have, senior lady, and I didn't mean to offend you, either. I would have stayed but the MHN wasn't exactly paying the bills/student loans, etc. It did, however, give me my first taste of the biz and I learned a lot from the people I worked with.

I guess I post on here because I like stirring up the pot, that's part of the job I have now. I also make a lot of postings because I'm in front of a computer a lot and honestly have nothing better to do. ;-)

  • I understand young people leaving Mtn. Home, as I have three sons who also needed to find higher-paying jobs in order to raise families, etc, and are now gone.

I think that's the main reason we in Mtn. Home would really love to have businesses in the area -- to utilize our young people better, so that they stay here, or else return here after trying their wings elsewhere. So the community seems to be trying to learn how to do that.
