Albert Clement, who heads the Department of Labor office in Mountain Home and is the current president of the Chamber of Commerce, has announced his candidacy for one of the two city council seats up for election this November.

The seats currently held by Mark Russell and Tom Rist are up for election, but Rist is running for mayor, guaranteeing that at least one new council person will be elected.

"This is a very exciting time to be a citizen of Mountain Home," Clement contended. "Our base is alive and well with many exciting things on the horizon. The community of Mountain Home is growing and expanding.

"We have new businesses opening, Mountain Home Auto Ranch will be moving closer to the freeway providing space in their current locations for businesses to move into. Jobs are at record levels for this area, which provides gainful employment for our citizens, who are then able to buy homes, newer vehicles, address medical and health concerns and shop locally," he said in a prepared announcement statement.

"As the president and vice-president of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce it has been my pleasure to work diligently for the betterment of Mountain Home's business community, ultimately benefiting the entire community. If elected to the Mountain Home City Council I would continue with that commitment to work for the betterment of the community and surrounding area."

Clement said that areas he would focus on would be "to insure the growth of Mountain Home is controlled and monitored to insure that the growth does not exceed the capabilities of our infrastructure, our fire department or law enforcement.

"I believe the city needs to set the standards or be good stewards of our natural resources, especially water usage. Those who are reducing their usage of our natural resources, water, natural gas, electricity, etc., should be rewarded in some manner and the city should be leading the way.

"I am interested in the continuation of vitalization of the downtown core area," he said, adding that "I am interested in a strong city where the citizens feel safe, valued and a part of what is happening.

"We have terrific recreational activities and programs, which I would like to see expanded."

He went on to note that "I want to continue the wonderful relationship the community has with Mountain Home AFB. We are fortunate to have the outstanding men and women who serve our country living here in our community. This makes our community a very unique place to live, work and play."

Clement came to Mountain Home in 1993 and retired from the U.S. Air Force at Mountain Home AFB in February 1996 after 20 plus years of service. He began working for the Idaho Department of Labor in February 1997 in the Mountain Home local office, was promoted to manager in July 1998 and moved to Bonners Ferry, and then returned back to the Mountain Home office in July 2000. During the time he was in Bonners Ferry he served as the Chamber of Commerce vice president.

He was elected to the Executive board of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce in 2004 and was appointed to the Military Affairs Committee (MAC) in 2005. During 2006 he served as the vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and currently is serving as its president.

"During this time I have been able to work closely with the City's Economic Development office with business recruitment and expansion, City Council members, County Commissioners and Mountain Home AFB leadership," he said.

Albert and his wife, Kim, have been married for 31 years and have a married daughter, Trina Marie, who currently resides in Grand View with her husband, Jett.

Clement said that those who would like to become part of the Clement for City Council team can contact him at 364-7788 ext. 3261 (his office here in Mountain Home).
