Crazee Daze kicks off Saturday

Wednesday, May 11, 2005
The Candy Apple Amusements carnival, shown here in a picture from last year, will open tonight.

The annual Crazee Daze celebration kicks off Saturday in the downtown area, but the carnival for the event will open this afternoon at the former El Rancho lot across from Paul's Market.

This year the Crazee Daze event features a "Mad Hatter" theme, and in addition to the regular contest for merchants, who win a traveling trophy, a special contest will be held for citizens attending the event.

The "Mad Hat" contest will be held from 12:30-1 p.m. on E. Second North Street, adjacent to the Chamber office. Adults will be eligible to win prizes of $25, $15 and $10 in Chamber bucks (which can be redeemed at participating Chamber members), and prizes will be handed out for children 12 and under who enter the contest.

Hats for the event can be made by the individuals. In addition, some hats are available at Unique Boutique and Cherished Memories, and some will be available at the museum as well.

The Candy Apple Amusements carnival will operate through Crazee Daze.

As usual, Crazee Daze will feature sidewalk sales and booths throughout the downtown area, and Don's mini-train will be offering rides for children.

Most activities and booth sales will begin at 10 a.m. and the event lasts until about 4 p.m.

Jackson Street will be blocked off to provide easy access to the carnival during the week, from about 2 p.m. each day until it closes at night. Cones and barricades also will slow traffic through downtown on Saturday during Crazee Daze.

Entertainment Saturday will be provided by Davis and Michela French from 1-3 p.m. in the street adjacent to the Chamber office, where the Wheel of Fortune also will be provided.

A bubble-gum blowing contest will be held at 1 p.m. outside Global Travel.

A pet costume contest will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Youth Ranch.

Wells Fargo will have "Jack the Dog" present, handing out balloons, stickers, wash-off tattoes and prizes for kids.

The Elmore County Historical Museum will take part in the event, with the high school "trash-can drummers" appearing at 11 a.m., followed by a storyteller and a Mad Hatter's Tea from noon to 2 p.m.

Kurley's bar will hold a street dance Saturday night, beginning at 8 p.m., and will offer a barbecue during the regular Crazee Daze event during the day.

A motocross race will be held at Optimist Park at 11 a.m., with the riders driving their machines through town beginning at 10 a.m.
