Downright Humbled
Since my last post about lopping off a couple inches of hair, I was elected Vice President of Service for my fraternity. That meant on Dec. 5 I was in charge of creating a semester-long service program for my brothers and the pledges we will welcome Feb. 1.
A lot of this blog's focus will be on experiences in this facet of my life for the next semester, the other major focus being on my nerves/excitement as I prepare to launch fully into 'the real world' via graduation come May.
A part of my duties as an executive committee member for the fraternity is preparing a weekly report to present at our chapter meetings. Past Vice Presidents of Service have included some kind of theme (our outgoing VPS ran a 'twelve weeks of perspective' series, relating the scout law to our work as a chapter since our fraternity was created by a boy scout) and I've chosen to showcase the impacts each week of service has had on our four main service areas: the fraternity, campus, community, and nation.
As I began preparing some of my slides, I took a look at what my brothers have been up to over the break. We chart our service hours on an online platform, and when I ran a report for break, I was astounded. The past 3.5 weeks, my brothers have logged over 200 hours! What's more? I'm almost certain not all of them have logged everything.
I'll be gushing about this at our meeting Wednesday night, but I am downright humbled by the commitment to service. Seeing that lit the fire in my heart and gave me an extra push to create a program they can be as enthusiastic about when they return to campus next week.
Christmastime is supposed to be a season of selfless giving, and I whole-heartedly believe my brothers have exemplified that this year.
