Survey shows strong support for walking path

Saturday, December 29, 2012

An overwhelming majority of local residents expressed their support for the community's walking path as well as plans to improve a stretch of this trail, according to initial results from a recent survey.

Nearly 95 percent of the 240 people polled to date support the Mountain Home Pathway System and would use it more often once it gains additional improvements.

I understand the use/need of a walking path but why not put one in another part of town. Most residents that want to use this path have to drive to the other side of town to use it. Seems to defeat the purpose of a walking path, promoting a healthier life style. Why not put a question on the survey about the wish to have another path in a different part of town? The survey appears to be biased towards nothing but having the current path extended.

  • Old Guy,

No matter where a walking path is located, some portion of city residents will have to drive to it. The other portion of the present walking trail circles around the golf course boundary and is already sanded and graded. All it needs is a permanent walking surface like asphalt. To try and acquire land in another part of town for another walking trail and start from scratch would probably be cost-prohibitive. The survey also showed that more residents would use the present trail if it was longer.

  • Who cares if some residents have to drive to the walking path??? If anyone is upset about having to drive there then obviosly they arent interested in walking if driving is an issue...I use the path almost daily, fortunately its close enough to walk from my home, but in MH nowhere is too far to walk....why must people find an issure or a gripe with everything?

  • mhg4316 - I agree. Some people will complain about something no matter what. That's just human nature, I guess.

  • I was really hoping paving of the trail from 18th street to the golf course wouldn't happen. I use that trail a lot and would hate to see the natural beauty taken away by paving. Additionally, there seems to be less ice and slipping hazards on the non-paved portion. However, the people have spoken. I appreciate the City taking the people's opinions into consideration.
