Cross country squads trail during home tournament
Mountain Home finished in 10th place for the girls and 13th place for the boys at Friday's Mountain Home Invitational cross country meet at Desert Canyon Golf Course.
A total of 16 full teams participated in the girls runs and 18 in the boys events.
Skyview edged Jerome on a tie-breaker for first place in the girls race, as they both ended with 91 points. Borah was third with 97, Meridian fourth with 126, Elko, Nev., fifth with 134, followed by Melba 175, Columbia 196, Nampa 252, Twin Falls 252, Mountain Home 256, Wood River 261, Emmett 266, Canyon Ridge 282, Kuna 337, Cole Valley Christian 365, and Nampa Christian 407.
Arisha Karren led Mountain Home, finishing 34th in a time of 22 minutes, 48.90 seconds.
Aerial Groene came in 40th (23:04.60, Myra Vasquez 55th (23:37.90), Alicia Reynolds 63rd (24:17.70) and Shilo Clark 64th (24:17.90).
Mountain Home had four girls run in the junior varsity race.
Natalie Logue finished 10th (25:18.20), Tracey Gordon 19th (26:19.40), Erika Cook 24th (28:06.40) and Aundrea Dickinson,39th (28:39.80).
Kuna won the boys race with 79 points. Meridian was second with 102, Columbia third with 110, Burley fourth with 123, Borah fifth with 146, followed by Nampa 162, Twin Falls 187, Jerome 191, Wood River 218, Elko, Nev., 251, Nampa Christian 290, Skyview 293, Mountain Home 385, Emmett 390, Canyon Ridge 399, Victory Charter 402, Cole Valley Christian 464 and The Ambrose School 474.
Jake Schaefer led the Mountain Home boys, finishing 43rd, with a time of 18 minutes, 42.50 seconds. Andy Croft was two back at 45, with a time of 18:43.90. Steven Kreyche was 99th (20:47.40), Cody Ashby 100th (20:48.60) and Riley Urquidi 104th (20:56.40).
Mountain Home had four boys run in the junior varsity race. David Catts came in 41st at 21 minutes, 11.50 seconds, Bill King 74th (22:14.20), John Goodell 75th (22:18.20) and Andrew Turner, 111th (23:57.00).
Mountain Home head cross country coach Doug Root was pleased with the progress his runners are making each week.
"We're running better. Each race we perform a little bit better. This time, David Catts and Riley Urquidi both ran PRs for the boys. Everybody's down a little bit. We're moving up slowly in the with the boys.
"With the girls, we had two of our varsity girls, Myra Vasquez and Shilo Clark both ran PRs and dropped over a minute apiece off their times.
"If we can drop another 30 seconds to a minute time off each one of our boys and girls, we have a chance to get where we want to be," Root said, "so I'm real pleased with the progress we're making right now. Hopefully, the season's long enough to get where we need to be."
The Tigers go to Nampa's Lake View Park this Thursday for the Gary Ward Invitational.
"Not very many people have school that day, so they're running that meet at nine o'clock in the morning. It should be a good meet. Again, we'll get a chance to run against most of the valley schools, which we saw most of them at our meet, so we'll see how it goes."
The Gary Ward Invitational starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at Lake View Park in Nampa.
