Verlie A. Hughes, 80 years old, passed away on May 20, 2012, at her home in Mountain Home. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Bruneau American Legion. Cremation was under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel.

Verlie was born Oct. 8, 1931, in San Jose, Calif., to Lois and Audrey Jarrett. They later moved to Seattle where she graduated at West Seattle High School.

She met Donald Shields, and they were married on July 18, 1952. They moved to The Dalles, Ore., where they had their first daughter, Susan, in 1953. They moved back to Seattle where they had their second daughter, Margaret "Peggy," in 1957.

In 1963, Don and Verlie moved to Melba, Idaho, where they ran the Ferry Service Store for seven years. Don and Verlie later divorced.

While working at Bucks Bar and Grill in Melba, she met the love of her life, Henry "Hank" Hughes. They had the school bus contract, and whenever they had a chance they would go fishing. Hank passed away in 1979, and she was lost and heartbroken.

Verlie moved to Bruneau in 1980 where the community opened their arms and made her feel like she was home again. She ran the Bruneau One Stop for 20 years. She loved the community and loved to cook for everyone.

Verlie is survived by her daughters, Suzie Pline and Peggy Rae both of Mountain Home; her one granddaughter, Melanie; one great-grandson, Colby; and two sisters, Jean and Phyllis. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Hank.

Thanks to Accent Hospice for all they have done, and a special thanks to everyone at Cedar Crest.
