Jerry Stevens

Jerry Wayne Stevens, 62, of Mountain Home, passed away on Nov. 11, 2011, at a Boise hospital. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Mountain View Cemetery, with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #26 Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel.

Jerry was born on March 5, 1949, and was adopted by George and Patricia Stevens at the age of 11 1/2. He grew up in Kentucky and Missouri. At the age of 19, as a strapping 100-lb. young Elvis look-alike, he joined the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Idaho Falls, he met and later married his beloved wife, Cheryl Melgaard. A few years later, Jenny was born and brought extreme joy to their lives. A few years later came a bouncing baby boy, Jerry Jr.

The family eventually settled in Mountain Home in 1980 when Jerry's job at Qwest brought him there. He worked for Qwest and was the telephone dude for 39 years until he retired. He then worked at Marathon Cheese for the last three years.

He was a dedicated and hard worker, but was still there for his family and made sure they had everything they needed. Jenny would wait for him to come home from work to play catch and Jerry Jr. enjoyed going to computer club with his dad and playing with the computers and spare parts that his dad brought home for him.

Jerry loved Mountain Home and being out in the community. He coached Pee Wee Soccer for years. You could find Jerry most Saturdays at Railroad Park or at a local garage sale looking for handheld Craftsman Tools to take back to Sears and exchange for new ones.

He liked to take walks with his dog, Pud, and then Sadie, and pick up aluminum cans along the way. When he could, he enjoyed panning for gold with Cheryl at Rocky Bar. He loved animals and tried to take care of as many animals as he could, whether it be the strays he took in, the feral cats running around the parking lot at work, the squirrels and birds in the backyard, or just giving a few bucks to the Humane Society. His heart was full of compassion.

Jerry loved and enjoyed all of his kids, Jenny, Jerry Jr., and the "other kids" that came along - Charon, Jeanette, Stephanie, Christina, Jason, Laurie and Kevin. They all appreciated all the lectures and life advice he would give them.

He was also blessed with seven grandchildren whom he loved to buy toys for at garage sales and give them dollar bills from his "ATM" shirt pocket. He will be missed by all of his grandkids: Sage, Aurora, Anthony, Skye, Trina, Rein and Silas.

Everyone who really knew him thought he was a nice, generous, hardworking, dedicated and loyal man. He was an all-around good guy with a great sense of humor. We hope that he knows he was loved by all and we all cherish the time we had with him. He will never be forgotten.

The family requests that donations in Jerry's memory be made to the Mountain Home Humane Society, P.O. Box 10, Mountain Home, ID 83647
